There’s something special about a husband and wife that can work together. After all, if you’re already spending most of your time together at home, then how is it possible to spend another 8 hours working together. Some couples have rules against working together but, Jonathan and Ruth are the exception to the rule. Find out why.
Tell me about yourself. Who’s behind Gonzalez J Photography?
Gonzalez J. Photography & Design Studio is the husband and wife team of Jonathan and Ruth. Jonathan is the artist and the photographer, the man with the creative vision for highlighting your day in a touching and timeless way. Ruth’s focus is on communicating with couples and assisting Jonathan during sessions and on the wedding day, making sure we stay on schedule 🙂 We believe the best relationships and photographs have something in common – they see into our hearts and bring out moments of beauty. They bring a quiet comfort and peace to times of stillness and amplify everyday situations into something joyful and worthy of celebration. Such relationships should be treasured, our goal is for you to have an image on your wall, or an album on your table, where you feel caught up in those emotions every time you see it.
Describe your signature style.
Our style is modern and romantic, we’re all about telling the story of your love with beautiful and authentic images. The wedding day can be a whirlwind and we think it’s so important to carve out some time for creative portraits of just the bride and groom. It gives you space to soak in everything that’s happening and we’ll also provide some direction to give you those statement images. During other times of the day we hang back and capture the tender, humorous, and joyful expressions and moments as they unfold. Your pictures will always let you relive the emotions of your day.
What’s the one thing you wish couples knew before searching for a wedding photographer?
That it’s ok to feel overwhelmed or like you don’t know where to start! It can be tough to navigate the industry terms and try to figure out the difference between several photographers. You may find yourself attracted to more than one style, that’s ok!! If you like the pictures you see, the next step is figuring out if you’re a good match. Honestly, it can kind of feel like dating all over again! The photographers are the ones that are truly going to be around you all day. They’ll be part of so many important moments, you want to make sure your personalities are a good fit. On your wedding day, if things start to feel like they could quickly spin out of control, it is such a relief to trust that that your photographer can not only handle it, but that their presence will bring positivity and a sense of calm to any situation.
What wedding planning advice would you give an engaged couple?
Take some time to think about what is most important to you about your wedding day. Typically, both the bride and groom say it’s joining their lives and creating a new family. Then for the bride, it might also be that the ceremony is taking place in the same chapel where her grandparents got married. While the groom might be really excited about the menu they chose which was based on his time studying in Italy. Knowing what these things are will make it so much easier to know what to say “no” to and where to focus your time and effort while you’re planning. We also encourage to you share the things that are important to you with your photographer. When we know what they are, we can focus on truly highlighting them in your photographs!
If you had an extra hour in the day, how would you spend it?
It’s a toss up. If we had an extra hour, half the time we’d love to spend it sleeping in, snuggled under the covers, cuddling tight. The rest of the time, we’d use the extra hour to get out, explore somewhere new, and of course, we couldn’t help but envision how incredible the new spot would be for pictures!
We love hearing every couple’s first date story, so it’s only fair if we share ours. Here’s our story from Ruth’s perspective.
I first knew Jonathan existed on January 20th, 2012, when he sent me a “wink” online. While flattered, I wasn’t about to waste my time on someone who didn’t know how to have a conversation. The site had several auto response options and I selected the following: Thanks for your wink! Would love to hear more from you. Please write me a letter and tell me about your interests and what you found interesting about me 🙂
I was pleasantly surprised when Jonathan rose to the challenge! After a few weeks of emailing each other long messages daily, we finally made plans to met up in person. The evening was off to a good start when Jonathan showed up at my door with roses and made it through the roommate small talk. Later, after a delicious meal, he suggested stopping by the Mall. I quickly said yes knowing how lovely, and romantic, the Monuments are at night. We ended up at the Lincoln Memorial where I pretended not to be freezing while I waited for him to make his move. He finally did and we had our first kiss! It was so much fun reliving those memories during our pictures together this summer!
