I met Josh at a Bridal Bellhop Happy Hour back in October. He was the first guest to arrive and I knew he had character. I mean he did show up wearing a killer cowboy hat and a smile! I don’t judge a book by its cover, just like you shouldn’t judge a DJ by its hat. After a decade of creating mix tapes, Josh built a diverse taste in music, which gives him the skills to curate the songs that will get your guests on the dance floor. Whether you’re into hip-hop or Jazz, Josh has something for you in his collection of 40,000 songs. Find out why Josh behind DJ G Events is one of the best DJ’s you can hire for your wedding.
Tell me about yourself. Who is Josh?
I’ve been making mix tapes and dancing in my bedroom since I was six years old. Whether it was gettin’ down with James Brown, air guitaring to Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin, or chilling out with Bob Marley, I’ve always had an appreciation for an extremely wide variety of music.
As tapes fell by the wayside and were replaced with CD’s, I began making mix CD’s for friends and family and, as my CD collection grew, my musical horizons began to widen and encompass genres such as Jazz, Country, Disco, Electronic Dance Music, 60s Soul, and many others. DJ G Events began as a way for me to share my ranging taste in music with others, and I began mixing tracks at house parties throughout the D.C. area. House parties led to birthday parties, which led to proms, 50th wedding anniversaries, weddings, and so on. Over the past five years, DJ G Events has grown from a bedroom hobby into a full service DJ profession.
Describe your signature style.
As an MC, I pride myself on making classy, clear, and concise announcements throughout each event so your guests know what is happening when. I’m also perfectly accustomed to introducing bridal parties and, of course, building energy in the reception to introduce the newlywed couple. What I don’t do, is be a “hype-DJ” behind the turntables. I’m not going to scream at your crowd to get up and dance, put their hands in the air, or drop it low. Instead, I let the music do the talking. I have honed my skills over the past decade, and mix both classic and new songs on the fly – creating unique mashups that you and your guests can sing along to on the dance floor. Of course, after playing nearly 50 weddings over the past several years, I recognize what songs will motivate people to get out on the dance floor and what songs to avoid. I play a wide variety of music selected from my library of over 40,000 songs and based on the preferences of the newlywed couple. Each event I play is unique, and I always strive to tailor what I play to my clients’ taste in music!
What three adjectives best describe you and your business?
Professional. Energetic. Experienced.
Describe the experience clients can expect when working with you.
Communication is key. I work with each client to create a timeline for each event so everyone involved in the wedding planning knows what will happen when. Clients are encouraged to rely on my experience with weddings to create a reception itinerary that keeps guests engaged and having the time of their lives. During the event, I will ensure the newlyweds are in the room for toasts, ready for special dances, and prepped to hit the dance floor with their best friends and family.
What keeps you passionate about weddings?
I DJ a variety of events throughout the year, but there is nothing like the thrill I get from being a part of a wedding. I remember the details of my own wedding almost 7 years ago and am so appreciative of the wonderful vendors who made our day run so smoothly. Your wedding is the most important event you will ever host and it’s a privilege for me to be an integral part of making it special.
What’s your favorite part of a wedding?
My favorite part of a wedding is when the party is well under way and the bride and groom are out on the dance floor. I love the look on their faces when they glance around and see all of their friends and family having an amazing time.
What wedding planning advice would you give an engaged couple?
Choose a few things on which you want to spend the majority of your budget. Weddings are expensive and there are a lot of wonderful products and vendors out there. Pick what really matters most to you and your fiance. However, remember that you can’t have a rocking party without great music and a talented DJ/MC!
If you had an extra hour in the day, how would you spend it?
I have a baby girl at home and I would love to spend it playing with her. She has a music play yard and is in training to be DJ G’s next assistant.
