Tell me about yourself. Who is Sandy behind Chic Weddings & Events?
I spent most of my life on the west coast. I graduated from the University of Arizona with a Molecular & Cellular Biology degree and a MBA from University of Phoenix. I wanted to help people in the medical field, but realized I can’t stand the sight of blood. I’m married to my wonderful husband John and we have two cool little boys Jonathan & Ethan; ages 5 and 10 and a millennial daughter Linda. I love to cook and entertain! Our house is centered around great people and awesome food. Cooking relaxes me and really opens my creativity.
How did you get into the wedding industry?
While I was in school, I realized that I needed a part-time job and started working at the Lodge at Ventana Canyon in Tucson Arizona. Then I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and worked for one of the top hotels on the West Coast: The Westin St. Francis. That’s where I started event planning.
How long have you been a wedding planner?
I have over 15 years of wedding planning experience. I started in the hotel/hospitality industry working mainly in operations, then moved into meeting and wedding planning.
Describe your signature style.
Classic with emphasis in a bold color scheme.
Describe the experience clients can expect when working with you.
Clients will get to know my team. We collaborate and really provide guidance and know how to make their vision come to life. Through my experiences, I can foresee how things may or may not happen, adjust the approach, and make it seamless to everyone else.
What keeps you passionate about weddings?
The final symphony which is the wedding day. When everything comes together, you see the emotions of the couple, family and friends and how much they enjoy everything. I am helping to bring love together.
What is your favorite thing (or things) about planning weddings?
Design! I love to design to give the wow factor to our couples. It’s not necessary spending a lot of money, it is about pulling everything together for them and making it more than what was expected!
What’s the one thing you wish couples knew before searching for a wedding planner?
Experience and support counts. What I mean by that is: Does the planner you are hiring have support and experience with different types of event planning? If someone is a junior planner, do they have the support of the company behind them?
What wedding planning advice would you give an engaged couple?
Don’t just e-mail! Talk to your vendors. Meet with them face to face (video conferencing is great!). I am a big believer that you need to have chemistry with the vendors you hire. Being face to face, you will be able to see facial expression and body languages. At the end, do you feel you can trust the person?
Why will a couple love working with you?
I am honest and hold the highest ethics and integrity in my work. When I commit, I am all in!
What wedding trends are you currently obsessed with?
I love designing unique seatings and bring in lighting that changes the environment. These two elements can change the mood of the entire wedding and take your guests on a journey.
If you had an extra hour in the day, how would you spend it?
I would focus on bettering myself. As a working woman, I am being pulled to all different directions. I would take that extra hour and take care of myself. This way, I will be centered and rejuvenated to support my family, friends, and clients.
What’s your favorite love song?
Which celebrity wedding would you love to plan and why? (Past, present, or future)
Jackie Kennedy Onassis! She is the epitome of classic sophistication. I would design a seaside black tie wedding with either glass windows or a clear tent.
How long in advance do you recommend couples book their wedding planner?
As soon as possible! 90% of the couples I know wish they had a wedding planner. As a planner myself, I had a wedding planner for my wedding! You don’t want to be stressed out on your wedding day. Having someone who can make decisions for you will ensure you and your guests enjoy your wedding day.
